Removing Radiators

I have two radiators (water) that I want to remove. How do I do this?

It depends on whether you want to put something else in like baseboard, etc.

If you will be keeping the hot water heating system, you will have to install something else, or tie off the end connectors after removing the radiators.

Removal of the radiators would require shutting down the boiler's on/off switch, shutting off the cold water supply next to the boiler to prevent additional cold water from entering the system, & draining about a gallon of water into a pan from the drain valve at the bottom of the boiler.

When you do this, the pressure/altitude gauge on the boiler should drop to zero---then go back up to the rads & open the relief valve on the upper side to let air in & all water should evacuate the radiators---you can then disconnect the side connectors with a large plumber's wrench (if they are screw-on connections).

If the side connections are simply soldered in, you will have to use a hack saw or reciprocating saw with metal cutting blade to cut the 1/2" or 3/4" copper connectors.

Sowly pull the rads away from the wall & tip one end with a 2 X 4, using a flat pan, to drain all the black, gooey water from the bottom of the rads---stuff some paper toweling in the holes to prevent a mess on the floor---large rads weigh over 300 lbs, so be careful moving them---they can be separated by removing the 2 long screw-bolts that run the length of the rad---then use a large crow bar to separate the cast iron sections to make it easier to move them out of the house.

Junk yards will pay a small amount for the scrap metal according to the weight of the rads.

If no baseboard is to be connected to the space where the rads were removed, the piping will have to be connected & re-soldered so that the hot water will run freely & the heating system will work---depending on the piping arrangement (and if the rads had shut-off valves on them, the old pipes can be stubbed off with soldered copper caps for a more pleasing floor appearance.

Once this is done, the boiler has to be turned back on, & the water supply valve re-opened so water again flows thru the piping---the air that got into the piping will have to be removed by opening the vents on the other rads in the system---the gauge on the boiler should read at least 12 psi when all the air is removed.
