I need help with a broken stair

 My townhouse has a split foyer and one of the steps has broken off, as this staircase is compleatly built in I can't see how to repair or replace the old stair. It looks like the front round piece broke off and the rest just fell back into the craw space. The staircase has 2 stringers and they are routered to accept the stair but I don't see any way to get the tread into the space
Thanks,

The treads are inserted from the back toward the front.
They are usually glued in the routered sections along with some nails and shims.

I can understand what you are suggeting but what about the front rounded edge it doesn't look like it will fit when I slide it in?????

The rounded ends may be notched, that would help explain why the tread broke. If it is just the nose of the tread that broke off you may be able to reinstall it with glue and Miller Dowels rather than replace the whole tread.

A couple pictures would be helpful.

A captured tread. Usually one side is deeper than the other. Remove nails, cut glue and paint bonds, and trim or cove moulding underneath tread nose. Shift tread nose to one side and the other to figure out which side is deeper, push to deeper side then remove toward you and tilting free side up. Reverse process to replace.
