Fixing a notched joist
Williebird

Joists are 2x10x12. They were notched to put in an overhead light above a suspended basement ceiling. The notch is approximately 1.25 inches high and 12 inches in length. Notch is close to being in the middle 1/3 of joist. Trying to find the correct way to fix this. Is sistering a new joist the full length the only correct way to fix this issue.

1.25" x 12" hole in the joist exceeds the max allowed.

Sistering or replacement. Best to make the sister as long as you can fit in so that it bears on both ends. Construction glue and 5 nails across at 1 ft intervals.
