Exposed nailing

Just wondering why Tommy used exposed nailing when putting up the new clapboards?
Maybe to match the existing method?
I expected him to nail at the top of each board and have the nailhead covered. I would never question Tommy's methods so just wondering what I'm missing.

That type of nailing helps prevent cupping.

Thanks for the info.
I have probably seen the other hidden nailing on cement boards or material that can't cup. Good to know.

Re: Exposed nailing

precisely as jack mentioned. for fibre cement that has a 5" exposure it gets blind nailed, however if you switch toe the 8" stock you then have to face nail it.

cedar shingles also get blind nailed but once you go over a 6" exposure your now going to have to face nail
