Newton GenNEXT | Salvage Helps the Bottom Line
On this episode of This Old House
Kevin finds Joe helping Norm install an old door in the hall for the new master bedroom suite.
Homeowners Joe and Liz hope to save as much as they can from the old house and like the thought of reusing the original doors where possible.
Outside, to make room for the driveway, the back corner of the lot needs to be leveled. That requires a retaining wall. Kevin finds Roger getting ready to install an instant stone wall that was built offsite in sections.
As part of our Generation NEXT project, Kevin visits a career day in Massachusetts where building contractors meet students from vocational high schools and pitch their industry as a career path. Michelle Glassburn, who runs an industry council, takes Kevin on a tour of the various booths representing carpentry, plumbing, electricians and HVAC. Kevin talks to experts like Ron Peik, our demo expert, about opportunities in the remodeling industry.
Following the progress at the Idea House in Rhode Island, Kevin finds Jeff Sweenor and his crew building twin built-in beds for a third-floor kids’ bedroom.
The Newton project also has built-ins and some might be as old as the house. Kevin finds Tommy and finish carpenter Mattie Forde reinstalling a corner cabinet in the dining room that was moved out for construction.
