How to Unclog a Toilet
5 to 10 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Just make sure to push the plunger all the way down and release it quickly.

In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating contractor Richard Trethewey explains how to unclog a toilet.

Steps:
1. Press the plunger down into the toilet until it’s fully compressed.
2. Quickly pull up on the plunger handle to suck the blockage free; repeat, if necessary.
3. For stubborn clogs, insert the end of a closet auger into the toilet bowl.
4. Crank the handle on the closet auger to force the flexible cable through clog.
