Q&A

Q: How do I clean the tarnish from my solid-brass outdoor light fixtures? And then what can I do to protect the metal from tarnishing in the future?

—Don Sadowski, Larkspur, CAlif.

Tips

To unscrew the base of a broken light bulb, cut a raw potato in half and press the cut end onto the jagged glass. (The University of Idaho's Stephen Love, Ph.D., recommends an easy-to-grip Russet.) Lest you bake the potato—and yourself—unplug the lamp first.
