Traditional shades force you to choose between privacy and daylight. Top-down, bottom-up shades solve that problem by allowing you to lower the shade from the top, blocking outside views while still letting light in. Once ordered correctly, installation is quick and straightforward.
How Order Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades
The most important step is measuring correctly before ordering. Each window should be measured individually—even if they appear identical.
- Choose Your Mount Type
Decide whether you want an inside mount or outside mount:
Inside mount: Installs inside the window frame for a clean, built-in look. Requires sufficient window depth and more precise measurements.
Usually requires a minimum depth for a secure inside mount. Check the manufacturer’s specifications.
Outside mount: Installs on the trim or wall above the window. Easier to install and better for blocking light or covering shallow window frames.
Tip: An inside mount looks more streamlined, but an outside mount can hide uneven window frames and reduce light gaps.
- Measure the Width
Measure the width of the window in three places: top, middle, and bottom.
Record all three measurements.
Use the smallest measurement when ordering.
- Measure the Height
Measure the height in three places: left, middle, and right.
Record all three measurements.
Use the largest measurement when ordering.
- Order the Shades
Order your shades using your final measurements. List width first, then height. Double-check measurements before ordering.
How to Install Top-Down Bottom-Up Shades
Once your shades arrive, installation typically takes less than 30 minutes per window.
- Mark Bracket Locations
Read the manufacturer’s instructions for bracket spacing.
Nathan’s kit recommended placing brackets 2–4 inches from each corner.
Measure and mark bracket locations.
Use a level to ensure marks are aligned. - Mark Screw Holes
Hold the bracket in place at your mark
Trace the screw hole locations
Repeat for the remaining brackets - Drill Pilot Holes
Drill pilot holes using the recommended drill bit size.
This makes installation easier and prevents splitting wood trim. - Install the Brackets
Secure brackets using the provided screws.
Check that brackets are level and aligned. - Install the Shade
Hook the front lip of the shade headrail onto the bracket.
Push or snap the back into place until secure. - Attach the Handle
Snap or slide the handle onto the bottom rail.
Test operation by raising and lowering the shade. - Final Check
Raise and lower the shade from both top and bottom.
Make sure movement is smooth.
Confirm the shade sits level.
Once installed, adjust the top portion of the shade to block outside views while still allowing natural light to fill the room—keeping both homeowners and their four-legged watchdogs happy.
