When a pair of homeowners in New Orleans wanted to replace their shutters, they needed a historically accurate solution that the city would approve of. Carpenter Nathan Gilbert partnered with a local expert to develop the perfect solution.
Install Functional Wood Shutters: Step by Step
- Remove existing shutters. In many cases, this will require removing one hinge with a screwdriver so the shutters can be lifted off the other hinges. Remove the hardware as well.
- Measure the shutters and order a new set slightly oversized so they can be trimmed to the opening. Make sure to consult with your local historical society for a list of approved materials.
- Fill the old hinge mortises in the window frame with Dutchmen blocks. Cut them from ¼-inch wood, pre-drill two nail holes, and glue and nail them into place.
- If the old shutters are too deteriorated to use as templates, measure the overall height of the window frame. Then, measure the width. Keep in mind that window frames in older homes might not be plumb, level, or square, so take multiple measurements.
- Mark the shutters and cut them to length and width using the circular saw. Tilt the saw blade to cut a slight bevel on the bottom of the shutters to match the window sill. Then, use a planer to fine-tune the fit.
- Be sure to track the orientation of the shutters throughout the process, as they’ll each be custom-cut and shaped to a specific window frame. It’s best to keep them organized and oriented correctly.
- Place the shutters inside the window frame and check their fitment. Fine-tune as needed. Once they fit well, mark the hinge locations on the shutters with a pencil.
- Use a hammer and chisel to cut the hinge mortises in the shutters. Work slowly and deliberately to avoid unnecessary damage.
- Prime any exposed edges with an exterior-grade primer and brush to protect the wood.
- Install the hinges in the new mortises. With a self-centering drill bit installed in the drill, drill screw holes in each mortise.
- Attach the hinges to the shutters and the window frame with the screws included in the hardware kit. Once the hinges are attached, hang the shutters.
- Close the shutters. Working from inside the home, install the lock hardware according to the instructions.
