Kitchen design in Brookline: Insider Sneak Peek
TOH host Kevin O'Connor sits down with one of the Brookline homeowners and the couple's interior designer to talk kitchen layout
Meeting the needs of busy home cooks—not to mention keeping up with building code—doesn't always jibe with design plans. As interior designer Mariette Barsoum points out, cooktops are usually placed along a wall so that there's room for an adjacent backsplash plus adequate space for a vent hood. But the Brookline Mid-Century Modern House's owners have dreamed up a cook space featuring a gas cooktop that's right in front of the kitchen's wall of windows. A rendering showing a still unconventional but not unheard-of setup, with the cooktop incorporated into the kitchen island, gets nixed because it makes the vent hood a central feature of the room. In the end, a stovetop with a view wins the day.
