An invisible fix for a wood floor: Insider Sneak Peek
AskTOH carpenter Nathan Gilbert helps a homeowner remove a burn mark from wood flooring
In this clip from an upcoming segment from Ask This Old House, carpenter Nathan Gilbert assists a homeowner who's got beautiful wood floors—except for a burn mark. Fortunately, the unsightly burn is superficial enough that it can be sanded away. The two then use a tack cloth to pick up the fine dust from the sander. The cloth is just sticky enough to lift away all the debris, and unlike a wet rag, it won't raise the grain on the just-sanded wood. Since the floors aren't stained, the last step is simply to match the finish. To take care of that, Nathan chose a water-based polyurethane with a semi-gloss finish. Using a two-inch bristle brush and following the grain, Nathan applies the poly working from the middle out, feathering the edges so that the new repair blends seamlessly with the old flooring.
