Ask TOH | Fan, Water Softener

Host Kevin O'Connor and electrician Scott Caron head to Denver to install a ceiling fan on a cathedral ceiling. Then, Kevin, along with general contractor Tom Silva, plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey, and landscape contractor Roger Cook ask "What Is It?" Afterward, Richard visits New Jersey to install a water softener.

The fan that Scott and Kevin installed was the Panama DC-54" with a light kit, three-foot extension rod, and remote control, all manufactured by Casablanca Fan Company.

Scott installed a pancake fan-rated box to support the fan. He used 14 gauge non-metallic cable to power the fan. Fan-rated boxes and electrical cable are available at home centers and electrical supply stores.

Tom asks the guys to identify a white square with a bull's-eye.

Tom demonstrated Dot Marks the Spot, which helps locate where to install fasteners to hang frames and shelves on a wall.
