SAN JOSE, Calif. and STAMFORD, Conn. – Sept. 19, 2024 – Today, Roku, America’s #1 TV streaming platform*, announced the premieres of season 46 of “This Old House” and season 23 of “Ask This Old House.” The two Emmy Award-winning home improvement series will premiere on Monday, Sept. 30 for free on demand on The Roku Channel, after they air on local PBS stations starting on Thursday, Sept. 26. Michael Burton, John Tomlin, and Chris Wolfe will return as executive producers alongside This Old House Productions.
“This Old House” season 46
Season 46 kicks off with the crew in Nashville, Tenn., or “Music City USA,” to see a tired brick cottage gain a new foundation that requires the house to be temporarily moved to the backyard. Then the crew drives to Ridgewood, N.J., where modern touches are added to a modest colonial revival. Finally, they arrive in Westford, Mass., at a large 1893 colonial with fire damage that completely destroyed the roof.
The Nashville project, set in the vibrant East Nashville neighborhood just three miles from downtown, features a 1929 brick cottage whose renovation required an extraordinary feat of engineering: the entire house had to be lifted and temporarily moved to the backyard to make way for a brand-new foundation using 10-foot precast panels. As host Kevin O’Connor described on set: “This city is hopping, and I have wanted to come down here for years.” The homeowners, a family of four who had been living in the house for two years, opted to stay in the historic district — meaning the footprint of the home couldn’t change, adding an extra layer of challenge to the renovation.
The Westford, Mass., project — a Colonial Revival built by a Scottish immigrant in the textile trade — presented the crew with a unique set of challenges born from fire damage. The three-alarm blaze, which occurred eight years before filming, started in the back left corner and destroyed the entire roof, requiring the house to be taken back to the studs. The season’s final episodes follow the crew as they frame a new hip roof with a widow’s walk, upgrade the old walls with guidance from a building science pro, and cut through the existing foundation to add a garage.
The Ridgewood, N.J., project holds a special connection to the previous season: general contractors Zack and Camille, who wrapped up a Season 45 project in town, landed the new Ridgewood renovation for Season 46. As Zack noted at the Season 45 reveal, crediting the collaborative effort: “We got an amazing support team of co-workers and trade partners behind us. It’s the way we pull it off.”
“Ask This Old House” season 23
“Ask This Old House” returns for season 23 with all new episodes featuring our cast of experts traveling across the country, including stops in Miami, Detroit, and Austin, helping homeowners tackle small jobs that make a big impact. New episodes include tips on how to repair and rebuild crumbling brick stairs, how to create a tropical fruit tree landscape, and how to keep your lawn looking good all year long.
