Sneak Peek: Charleston House Iron Gate
Many of Charleston’s historic houses are graced by ornamental ironwork gates, such as the one opening onto the 1803 Sword Gate House, on Legare Street, which features wrought-iron broadswords vertically interlocking two panels of the gate. The homeowners for the This Old House project in Charleston were inspired by many gates, including the Sword Gate, and wanted to rework their relatively simple iron gate. To do so, they turned to ironwork students at the American College of the Building Arts (ACBA) in Charleston. The school, heralding traditional building techniques, offers architectural ironwork as one of six craft specializations students may pursue. ACBA students lent their talent to the design and the execution of the gate, with work continuing over the course of the renovation project.
