Chemical paint and varnish strippers provide the fastest, easiest way to refinish furniture and cabinets. But the thick-bodied stripper and old finish dissolve into a gooey, gelatinous mess that's tough to clean up. Next time you're faced with this sticky situation, try this neater approach:

Just before you scrape off the finish, sprinkle the surface with a thick layer of wood shavings and sawdust. Wait 15 to 20 minutes, then scrape the surface clean. The shavings and sawdust will absorb most of the sludge and virtually eliminate any sloppy runs or drips.
