Fixing Bulging Bed Rails
Secure your slats now, before the fall
On most wood bed frames, the box spring and mattress are supported by several wood slats that span the bed rails and rest on narrow cleats. This simple setup works well, unless the rails bulge and the slats slip off the cleats, sending the box spring and mattress crashing to the floor. Not a pleasant way to be awakened.
Remedy the problem by first laying the slats in place, equally spaced along the rails. Use a couple of pipe clamps to pull in the rails and hold them straight. Bore pilots holes through the ends of the slats (to prevent splitting), then fasten them to the cleats with screws.
