Use the Thumbtack App to Find Contractors and Other Pros
Thumbtack ’s app can connect you with home improvement pros
Centriq is genius at using the phone’s camera to compile a useful master inventory of home appliances, while Thumbtack has developed a superior system of proposal and bid request forms for screening and connecting with qualified local pros for repairs and other home projects.
Thumbtack, in contrast, positions itself directly as a coach for tackling projects like upgrading the TV room or finding regular landscape help. A competitor to Centriq’s giant partner, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack prides itself on having a tighter match with pros, powered by Thumbtack’s well-developed request forms that help define a project for pros to bid on. The Thumbtack app has great tools for organizing and communicating with home help, but—unlike, for instance, Airbnb or Lyft, which scrub out phone numbers—it mercifully does not actively discourage parties from also communicating directly. (Pros pay Thumbtack a fee each time they bid on a job, which also helps increase the quality of bids and service matches.) Thumbtack projects span everything from personal training to kids’ birthdays, but it really shines at finding pros for custom home work like restoring old wood windows, setting up smart home lighting, or resizing cabinets for a new refrigerator.
