Stave Off Spring Bugs
Warmer temperatures herald the return of barbecues and other backyard fun, but they mean bugs are back, too. Here’s how to thwart three insects you’re likely to encounter this time of year
1. Mayflies Mating season starts in spring, and these light lovers often swarm well-lit windows or decks. To reclaim your outdoor space, swap in a yellow bulb, such as Feit Electric’s 60W Equivalent Yellow-Colored A19 LED Bug Light Bulb ($4.88; The Home Depot). The color gives off a less attractive wavelength.
2. Stink bugs Mild temps bring them out of winter slumber (and your attic). Vacuum or sweep up any bugs, and dispose of them in a lidded outdoor bin. “I’ve seen them chew through vacuum bags,” says Orkin’s Chelle Hartzer. To prevent reentry, seal or repair access points like door sweeps, window screens, and crevices around cables.
3. Wasps New queens are looking for spots to start colonies, so check even the shallowest overhang that could provide shelter. “We just don’t see long-term success with decoys or traps,” says pest control expert Michael Bentley. See a nest? Contact a pro ASAP to remove it. Better safe than stung.
