Cheerful cube storage with a patriotic twist
When it comes to evoking a cheerful vintage vibe, it's hard to beat Old Glory. But you needn't make a replica to harness the iconic banner's spirit. Here, an inexpensive cube storage unit offers a frame for the hallmark graphic elements. Set within a grid painted pale blue-gray, the colorful squares take on a shadowbox-like quality that lends drama to anything you display.
Open-back laminate storage cubes—ours are about 11 inches square—offer an easy starting point; sanding thoroughly and priming ensures that the color stays put. To make the back, we used ¼-inch lauan the same size as the bookcase, tracing the squares with pencil.
A white base coat went on alternating sections that we then taped off for three red stripes, varying their direction for interest. With the remaining squares painted blue, we hand-cut a stencil for a 3-inch star from plastic sheeting and pounced on the shapes using white paint and a foam brush. After letting the back dry overnight, we tacked it in place with finishing nails, avoiding the edges to prevent splits.
Feet painted to match elevate the look—and create a unique piece to fill with treasures from past and present.
TOH Tip: Adding just three stars per cube helps keep the look uncluttered.
