Pricewise: Adirondack Chairs
Before pulling up a seat to watch summer unfold, consider how these two differ in look, feel, and price
A similar patio chair, knocked together with solid planks on a lake east of the Adirondack Mountains, was patented in 1905. Within decades, lumberyards were using scraps to make slatted versions, and in no time the economical chair with the deep, raked seat and accommodating armrests became a classic. Though the two shown here share high fan backs and comfy rounded seat fronts, the budget version is painted wood, while the high-end one is durable recycled plastic and folds for winter storage. Here are a few other ways to size up their differences, from fit to price.

Is it for you?
If you want a roomier chair that can be planted outside—or folded up for storage.
Recycled, dyed plastic is molded into faux lumber in the U.S. Arrives in three pieces with a handful of stainless-steel hardware. Color runs throughout, but scratches may show. Low maintenance.
A beefier profile, with a broad, contoured back, a deeper, wider seat, and a visible folding mechanism. Arms are wide enough for a picnic plate. Finish is matte; screws are a bit glaring.
Sink-right-in big and substantial. Textured finish tries to suggest wood grain.
International Concepts Adirondack Yellow Chair
Dimensions: 28¼"W x 34"D x 37½"H
Weight: 21.8 lbs.
Is it for you?
If you are on the petite side, like the idea of painted wood, and own a covered porch.
Lightweight spruce and fir are finished with two coats of polyurethane and a top coat of paint that's vulnerable to dings and chips. Made in Asia. Arrives in nine parts with a big pile of plated hardware. Not weatherproof.
Better fit for smaller people. Under the nice, smooth finish is wood, which feels more natural.
A jauntier profile, with a narrower back and shallower seat, though obvious bracing is less than elegant. Armrests are wide enough for a coffee mug, with no visible screwheads. Glossy finish.
