Picket Fences with Personality
Add some character to your garden gate
Whimsical critter shapes—like the perky-eared bunny silhouettes shown—atop a section of fence or the slats of a garden gate are a fun way to customize your outdoor space. Simply sketch (or copy) a design on paper, making sure to size it to the width of your boards. Cut out the shape, and transfer it to a template made of thicker cardboard stock that you can outline directly on the wood. While a jigsaw might suffice for cutting out simple geometric shapes (like diamonds), a workbench fitted with a scroll saw is best for making the smooth, tight curves certain details—like bushy squirrel tails, pairs of dragonfly wings, or the plumes on quails’ heads—require. It also allows you to cut several stacked boards in a single pass. Want to break out of the look-alike mold even more? Give each picket a one-of-a-kind design.
