We asked St. Louis architect Randall L. Comfort for some upgrade advice. He would open up the enclosed porch to show off the house's original brick and make the entry more welcoming. To break up the massive roof and add a bit of square footage, Comfort would replace the shed dormer with a substantial front-facing gable with a Juliet balcony and a smaller shed roof over French doors. Grilles on the upper panes of the existing windows and new windows in the dormer pick up the dark-green accent color.
"It's such a cool take on our little home!" Brad says. "We love the sense of fun and attention to detail."
Nature-inspired colors and materials marry old and new surfaces and suit the house's style. Above, the gable end and small shed roof on the dormer showcase Craftsman-style support brackets.
