To use a tape measure, you almost always need a pencil. Which means you have to remember where you put it down and then, once you've found it, devote one hand and both eyes to making a mark in precisely the right spot. Levelution's Next 25-foot tape measure ($20) does away with that tedious and less-than-accurate process by letting the tape measure itself make the mark.

Just line up the red guide point on the case with the desired measurement on the tape, press the case down, and move its base slightly over the work surface. A tiny scribing wheel in the base leaves a mark exactly at the desired measure. (This replaceable wheel, made of the same hardened steel used for cutting glass, will mark almost any surface, including tile, metal, and smooth stone.) One hand is all it takes. Save pencils for drawing pictures.
