Live Q&A: Back to Dorchester
Norm Abram and Richard Trethewey answer your questions on a real-time tour
In addition to being able to ask questions directly to the TOH team, Insiders who tuned in to the September 25 live Q&A got a special treat as they watched Norm Abram and Richard Trethewey walk through the Dorchester house—the very first TOH project from 40 years ago.
With Kevin O’Connor conveying questions from Insiders, the trio checked out a few rooms of the Victorian house. Norm and Richard shared firsthand recollections since they worked on the Dorchester house.
As always, Insiders took home great advice from the guys, including Norm’s tip about making use of a 10-foot-diameter oak tree that had fallen on an Insider’s property (get someone with a portable saw to slab the wood on the property and let it air-dry for a few years) and his advice for dealing with a new window extension jamb that’s a little too big (make a piece of trim to conceal it).
Richard offered answers to questions about noisy air blowers (get a smart blower so you can control the maximum rpm, which will eliminate the noise), whether an old house can be renovated to be net-zero (yes, it can, by using solar energy and making the building envelope tight with insulation—just like the show’s Jamestown project), and whether a whole-house fan is worthwhile if you have central air (yes, especially in climates where you have shoulder seasons that don’t require running the air-conditioning; a fan uses much less power).
Check the Insider home page for the next event, and get your questions ready!
