Get Còsagach This Winter
Step aside hygge; there's a new cold-weather lifestyle trend in town
Need an excuse to sip a hot drink beside a fire as winter winds down? The Scottish tourism board, VisitScotland, has cooked up a rival to last year's ubiquitous Danish hygge. Enter còsagach, which is all about feeling snug and sheltered, but with a more social appeal—think cuddling with someone on the couch with mugs of hot cocoa while snow falls outside.
A quick refresher for the hygge-challenged: This aesthetic is meant to convey a warm, cozy vibe (certainly welcome in Denmark, where the average February temperature is 0º Celsius). The look is a modern take on classic elements of Scandinavian style: Think bare wood, natural textures, geometric patterns, and lots of white.
So where does còsagach come in? Scottish winters are hardly temperate. Bitter cold, rough seas, and wet weather make it tempting to stay inside. The Gaelic term's translation is debated (as is its pronunciation, with some saying kos-gough and others kaw-sa-gock, rhyming with loch). The gist is a nook or hole where a small creature might take shelter. If hibernating has ever struck you as a good idea, then còsagach agrees.
Though focused more on relaxing and taking in the moment, còsagach does have its very own aesthetic and vibe. Inspired by the Scottish countryside, the look is full of mossy greens, rocky grays, woolen whites, and a dash of red (can't forget that tartan!).
A plaid blanket or a few cable-knit throw pillows can give your space instant còsagach cred. But if you're looking to create the perfect cozy hideout all year long, a new paint color can do the trick. Behr Paint color expert Erika Woelfel recommends setting the scene with an earthy green or brown hue.
The hint-of-sage Scotland Road and soft brown Whiskey Barrel, two Scotland-inspired colors, are perfect picks. Want to stay a little more neutral? Woelfel suggests Off the Grid, a gentle taupe gray. Try one of these shades, and get ready to get còsagach.
