Ask This Old House: Sink Installation 101
Richard covers the bases for a bathroom replacement
During the course of the house calls they make for Ask This Old House, the TOH team often end up giving a bit of a tutorial on homeowner tasks.
For example: Season 14, Episode 6 turned into Sink Installation 101. When a homeowner found that his trendy vessel sink was letting too much water splash onto the granite vanity, Richard Trethewey helped him replace the vessel unit with a self-rimming model—covering all the basic steps of installing a sink.
The self-rimming sink that Richard suggested required a new faucet and handles as well as a new hole to be cut in the vanity. Richard worked with the homeowner to remove the vessel sink, change the drain line under the sink, and install the new fixture, faucet, and handles.
Along the way, Richard explained the entire hot and cold water flow system for the sink, described the proper fittings for every piece, and shared a great tip: “It’s a good idea to lay out all the pieces for the sink on a table or bed and attach them to the sink before actually carrying everything into the bathroom to install,” says Richard.
The end result is a new, fully functional sink with just as much eye appeal as the vessel model.
