In conjunction with The This Old House TV Veteran’s Special House Project, Cpl. Justin Gaertner describes how the new accessible house provided by Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) has changed his life. Justin served as a combat engineer and a minesweeper in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was critically injured by an improvised explosive device (IED), and both his legs had to be amputated.
HFOT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building specially adapted, mortgage-free houses for severely injured veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 35th-anniversary season of TOH TV concludes with the crew partnering with HFOT to help build and outfit a house in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, for a wounded Iraq War veteran.
