In conjunction with The This Old House TV Veteran’s Special House Project, Staff Sgt. Alex Dillmann and his wife, Holly, share how they are adapting to life in the new accessible house provided by Homes for Our Troops (HFOT). Alex was an infantryman in the U.S. Army when his convoy ran over an improvised explosive device (IED), leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. He and Holly are now looking forward to starting a family and are free to pursue many interests, like handcycling and gunsmithing, because their house is designed to meet Alex’s physical needs. HFOT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building specially adapted, mortgage-free houses for severely injured veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The 35th-anniversary season of TOH TV concludes with the crew partnering with HFOT to help build and outfit a house in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, for a wounded Iraq War veteran.
