Steps for Building a Bookcase with Fold-Down Desk
With your tools and materials ready, follow the steps below to bring this versatile DIY project to life.

1. Cut the Plywood to Size
Using the cut list and diagram and a miter saw or table saw, cut plywood pieces to size.
Many Home Centers are able to make these cuts for you if needed.
2. Prep the Boards with Pocket Holes
Using a pocket hole jig, drill three pocket holes in each end of the horizontal shelf
boards. Add additional pocket holes along one long edge of each hanger board.
3. Mark the Shelf Heights
Sandwich the side boards together. Measuring from their bottom edge mark the height
of the shelves at 12 ¾”, 32” and 44 ¾”. Separate the boards and carry the mark down
the inside of each board using a speed square.
4. Assemble the Frame
To start assembling the frame, position the top and bottom boards between the side
walls with their pocket holes facing away from the inside of the box. Apply glue to their
ends and drive 1 ¼-inch pocket hole screws though the top and bottom boards and into
the side walls.

5. Add the Shelves
Now add the horizontal shelves at the heights marked on the side walls, using glue and
1 ¼-inch pocket hole screws. For the second shelf from the bottom that will support the
tilt-down desk, ensure the board is flush with the front edge of the side walls—leaving a
gap at the back.
6. Add the Hanger Boards
Add the thin hanger boards on edge along the underside of the top board and below the
third shelf—flush with the back edge of the side walls— using glue and pocket hole
screws.
7. Add the Hinges
Mount one side of each hinge to the back edge of the desk board 3-inches from each
end.
8. Attach the Tilt-Down Desk
Place the desk board against the top side of the second shelf, flush with its back edge.
Mount the remining flap of each hinge to the back end of the shelf. Check that the desk
board can now flip up and down without binding.
9. Add the Backer Board

Flip the assembly face-side-down. Apply glue to the back edge of the boards. Position
the ¼-inch thick backer board onto the assembly and then nail it in place with 1-inch
finish nails. Add a magnetic catch to the backerboard and desk board to hold it in the
upright position.
10. Mount the Shelf on the Wall
Lastly, drive screws through the hanger boards and into studs to mount the shelf to the
wall.
