Author Icon By Brenda Woods Updated 03/15/2024

Embrace is one of the best pet insurance companies available. From customizable pricing with five annual deductible options to hip dysplasia coverage, this provider could be a great option for a pet insurance policy.

In this article, we review the company’s plans, pricing, availability, and more to help you determine if it’s the right pet insurance provider for you and your pet.

Not only does pet insurance help cover the cost of accidents and illnesses and quickly connect you to a vet during an emergency, but it also protects you from having to pay for expensive vet costs.

Key Takeaway: After our in-depth review of top pet insurance brands across the industry, we gave Embrace a score of 93.5 out of 100 based on its performance in key metrics such as customer service, reputation, monthly cost, species eligibility, coverage, and plan options.

Embrace

Pros

After selling its first pet policy in 2006, Embrace partnered with American Modern Insurance Group, Inc., a group of licensed insurers that underwrites policies for Embrace, to make coverage more readily available to customers.

Some highlights include:

  • Helpful mobile app for Android and iOS
  • 24/7 vet health line
  • Website chat for customer service
  • Donates $2 to charity for every policy sold
  • Launched charitable project in 2020 that raised more than $200,000

Embrace is available in all 50 states, including Hawaii, Alaska, and Washington, D.C. However, some specific coverage and discounts may not be available in every area.

We were most impressed with the company’s five annual deductible options of $200, $300, $500, $750, and $1,000 that help you customize your premium, as well as the Healthy Pet Deductible benefit that comes with each policy.

This feature helps decrease your deductible by rewarding you with a $50 credit each year you don’t file for claim reimbursement, allowing it to be as low as $0 until you file a claim.

What Discounts Does Embrace Offer?

In addition to the Healthy Pet Deductible, Embrace offers a handful of discount opportunities. Depending on your eligibility, you may qualify for:

  • 10% off with a multi-pet discount when purchasing a policy for two or more pets
  • 10% off if your employer offers an Embrace policy as a voluntary benefit
  • 5% off for active military members serving with the Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy, or Coast Guard

What Plans and Coverage Does Embrace Pet Insurance Offer?

Embrace offers a comprehensive Accident and Illness Plan and has an optional wellness add-on. Some of the veterinary care and procedures included in the Accident and Illness Plan are exam fees, genetic conditions, prescription drugs, dental trauma, congenital conditions, cancer treatment, allergy testing, physical therapy, acupuncture, general, specialist, and emergency care.

In addition to this plan, you can purchase the optional Wellness Rewards for Routine Care Plan. This additional coverage option is a wellness plan that reimburses you for routine care up to 100% of your chosen annual limit. The annual limit options for this plan are $250, $450, or $650.

Some items included in the optional Wellness Rewards for Routine Care Plan are flea, tick, and heartworm medication, routine blood tests, microchipping, medicated shampoos, routine vet visits, spay and neuter surgery, teeth cleaning, and prescription diet food.

What Does Embrace Not Cover?

The primary exclusion in Embrace pet insurance plans is preexisting conditions. During the sign-up process, Embrace defines a preexisting condition as “any injury, illness, or irregularity noticed by you or your veterinarian before the end of your waiting period, even if your pet never went to see a veterinarian for it.”

To determine if your pet has preexisting conditions, your pet must receive an examination by a vet 12 months prior or 14 days after the enrollment and start date of the policy. You can request a free medical history review after your purchase and cancel with a prorated refund if you disagree with the coverage offered.

Additionally, the standard plan and the wellness add-on don’t cover cosmetic, aesthetic, or elective surgeries, such as ear cropping or declawing.

Note: The Wellness Rewards plan is not available in Rhode Island.

How Do Customers View Embrace Pet Insurance?

Embrace has an A+ rating and accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but its profile shows mixed reviews regarding customer service, its claims process, and denied coverage.

Here are some Embrace customer reviews from the BBB:

“Wow, I’m shocked at the negative reviews. Are we talking about the same company here?? It kind of makes me wonder. My experience is exactly opposite of these negative complaints. They have covered all my claims very quickly. Submitting a claim is a breeze online. Every time I have called I get a person on the phone almost immediately without [a] wait. They are extremely helpful. There is nothing at all for me to complain about.”

James

“I appreciate their claims’ coverage, easy online claim submissions, and direct deposit claim reimbursement payments. Also, their customer service team members are always very helpful in sorting out claim details, answering questions, and reviewing claims to get me the maximum reimbursement.”

Sharon B.

“Typical insurance company! They would look for any smallest reason to deny your claim. That’s just their business model. I guess all the insurances are like that, so just save some cash for your pets in case of [an] emergency. They’ve been denying my claims over and over again and then [make] a permanent exclusion. Just makes me really mad!”

Vasyl I.

“Not enough information given when you join this company. Then when you send in claims, they aren’t covered, because nothing had been told to you from the beginning. I had to get more coverage to the tune of almost 50% more. Hardly any reimbursement. Not worth it!”

Suzanne A.

Is Embrace Pet Insurance Worth It?

While we’re particularly impressed with Embrace’s deductible options and diminishing deductible benefits, it’s also a solid choice for pet parents with animals that struggle with chronic conditions or hip dysplasia.

Embrace doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions before your policy starts, but if those issues arise after its effective date, you can have peace of mind that those conditions will be covered.
