Our Conclusion

After comparing USAA and State Farm, the This Old House Reviews Team recommends State Farm for basic coverage and USAA for comprehensive coverage.

A State Farm policy includes the six main types of homeowners coverage at a relatively affordable price. You can also customize your coverage with more than 10 endorsements.

However, State Farm has limited customer service hours, which makes it difficult to reach a representative during emergencies. The company also requires you to talk to an insurance agent before receiving a quote, which extends the quote process and makes it difficult to compare all of your coverage options in one place.

In comparison, USAA allows you to get an insurance quote completely online. This quote not only includes the six main types of coverage in your policy, but it also includes three more coverage options for credit cards, supplemental loss, and business property. While USAA has fewer endorsement options than State Farm, it allows you to choose your coverage amounts in areas that aren’t typically customizable, like dwelling and personal property coverage.

Note: Before purchasing any USAA insurance product, you must be a current or past military member or an immediate family member of a military member. If you fit that description and become a member, you’ll have access to the USAA bank and shopping discounts on top of insurance products and services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does homeowners insurance cover natural disasters?

Most base policies will not cover natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. However, most insurance companies, including State Farm and USAA, offer an endorsement for natural disaster coverage.

What is hazard insurance?

Hazard insurance, also known as dwelling and other structures coverage, is the part of your home insurance policy that covers the structure of your home. This type of insurance is usually required by your lender because it ensures the home remains in good condition if you ever default on your loan and the home needs to be sold.

Can I get home insurance for my mobile home?

Yes. Almost all home insurers, including USAA and State Farm, offer a specific mobile home insurance policy. A mobile home insurance policy includes the same coverage as a regular home insurance policy, but it takes into account the different building process and materials used in a mobile home.
