When a homeowner’s garage door opener remote range started to fail, he thought upgrading the openers might be his only solution. Building engineer Ross Trethewey had another idea: a simple smart home add-on system to improve its control and convenience.
First Things First: Check Compatibility
Before deciding if a smart garage controller is right for you, check your opener’s compatibility. If it has a learning button, which is usually a red square, but make sure to check your owner’s manual, then you can upgrade it to smart control. If not, you may need to replace your garage door opener for better control.
How to Make a Garage Door Smart
- Download the smart home hub app to your smartphone and turn on Bluetooth.
- Plug the smart home hub into the outlet and activate the hub’s Bluetooth pairing process.
- Pair the hub to the app using Bluetooth.
- Following the app instructions, pair the garage door control module with the smart home hub.
- On the interior of the garage door, clean a spot on the top panel with alcohol wipes and secure the module to the garage door.
- Hold down the red button on the garage door opener until it’s in learning mode, and then activate the garage door opener module in the app. The garage door should open once it’s paired.
- Mount the hub bracket to the wall using the drills and screws, and snap the hub to the bracket.
