White stuff on outside brick wall?

Does anyone know what this stuff is? We noticed that a white stuff on a red brick wall just outside and we have no idea what it is. Look at the pics and see if you can figure it out.

How do we get rid of it? What is it?

Re: White stuff on outside brick wall?

it is called effloresence. it is dissolved salts in the brick that leach out. this I know from online research. I have a similar problem, but mine is on the INSIDE. You can use a wire brush to get most off, then wash with muriatic acid, rinse well, and neutralize. I can't do that, being indoors. I'm going to try brushing and then vinegar (mild acetic acid).
Hopefully, someone out there has had real experience, and can help us both

Should have mentioned that it is due to a wet condition on the inside surface of the brick, and that the real repair is to eliminate the source of dampness. It's most likely bad flashing or uncalked cracks above the brick. If you don't fix that, the condition will keep repeating itself.
