What's the backset?

I purchased a new entry door that has the 2 holes for the handleset already drilled. The literature on the door says that the handleset needs to have a 2 3/8 inch backset but when I measure the distance from the edge of the door to the center of the hole, it is only 2 1/4 inch. Am I going to have a problem? Thanks, Linda.

It is likely that your measurement is off a touch and that the door is accurate. If you're concerned that the door is in error, install the lock and handset prior to replacing the door to make sure they fit properly.

The bolt should slip into the edge of the door with little to no problem, though you may need to work on the mortise a touch for it to seat properly, then install the handset/lock, which again, should kind of "float" in the middle of the hole when properly aligned with the bolt.

Mistakes happen, however, in the 20 years I've been in the trade I've never come across a door that was improperly drilled from the factory. Key words "from the factory".

Please post back and let us know how it goes. :)
