What to replace the popcorn ceiling with?

My husband and I have taken the popcorn off the ceiling in our bathroom I want to replace it with a textured ceiling but I'm not sure what medium to use. I watched the builders of our previous house put the ceilings up. It looked like they were using drywall mud and a tool that would leave a pattern in the mud. Was it really drywall mud? or is there a similar product out there to make a textured ceiling with?

Re: What to replace the popcorn ceiling with?

What worked well for myself and my husband was just using a 5 gallon bucket of old reliable joint compound and troweling it onto the ceiling. It took a little bit of elbow grease, but it actually looks quite nice. We didn't do anything "fancy" as far as a pattern, just random swirls. We just applied primer and paint after that. It was pretty cheap to do as well!

You can use mud or drywall compoun to have a textured look to your ceiling. Your local home repair/remodel store will also have drwall/plaster texture kits as an option.
