What Finish Was Used on My Parquet Floor ?

My main level floor is original 1964 9" square parquet . . . any guess as to what finish was used ? wax ? was polyurethane around in 1964 ?

So far, in a year, we have not used any cleaner; just vacuuming & Swiffering. We used Bona for spot cleaning even though we don't know the finish.

We suspect the previous owner's housekeeper (sometime in 45 years) used water-based liquids because there is noticeable shrinkage and noise (walking causes the tiles to strike the concrete base or each other). (We didn't detect it as the seller had a lot of area rugs.)

The finish has a slight shine . . . not a noticeable dull which I would expect for a wax.

Any way to test by using different cleaners ??

The house was built by a neighbor builder for his retirement, so his contractors used mostly good materials and presumably didn't skimp on workmanship.

Any ideas for the above ??

It could be shellac, Try some alcohol in a place not noticable and see if it dissolves the finish.
