Re: What the???

Years ago (in the days before Big Box Retailers) I was picking up some molding at my real lumberyard. Now at the time, I was doing about $30K per year with them, so I was a pretty good customer. Among other items, I needed some 9' wooden cornerbeads (normally an in-stock item). All that the lumberyard had in stock were 8-footers. At no expense to me, they sent an employee to their supplier (about 1/2-hour south), picked up the molding, then had it delivered to my jobsite (about 1/2-hour north). It cost them at least $100 to bring me about $30-$40 worth of trim.

I dare a Big Box store to match that kind of service.

The thing I like best about HD is that the price marked on the shelf has no relationship to the price you get charged at the register.

A big box won't even kick in free delivery, regardless of amount you spend, what makes you think they'd be willing to go get a SPECIAL ORDER item for you, let alone bring it to a jobsite? That's one of many problems with a big box, they're too concerned about dimes to worry about the hundreds of thousands of dollars they lose because they don't know how to run a service oriented business.

DB.

If you REALLY want to see their eyes roll into the back of their head, ask them for an unspecified do-hickey. I'm a problem solver, and often come upon things that have no "proper part" available. One must improvise in situations like this, and on occasion I'll walk into a store and ask one of the helpful hardware folks "what do you have in this entire store that will do this?" I do get surprised once in a while when they're able to come up with helpful ideas.
