waste pipe from toilet sits higher than floor level-ideas?

A toilet waste pipe in my rental unit sits about an inch higher than the floor surrounding it. This is my wife's old house. About 10 years ago my wife had somebody build a "pedestal" for the toilet out of 3/4" plywood to make up the difference. The toilet keeps coming loose now. I replaced the bolts and wax ring about 1 year ago and it's loose already.
Is there any better way to deal with this besides replacing the old metal waste line or the entire floor/sub floor, which are both still in good shape?

I assume you're talking about the floor flange which sits on top of the drain. If that's the case, the best solution is to lower the flange. You need a plumber for this.

Yup,the flange sits too high.
I was hoping there was a fix I could do myself.

What size and type pipe do you have? If I had these questions answered I may be able to help you with lowering the flange.

Cast iron,I believe it's 4".

I don't know how good you are doing a thing like this. If you don't feel 100% sure, call a plumber, it will be money well spent. And you'll get rid of the pedestal.

You need to remove the existing flange, expose the drain and place a new "push in" ABS flange, the kind that you can tighten in place with the provided screws.

Step 1: Use an angle grinder to bring the pipe flush to the floor.

Step 2: Then use an Oatey Twist-N-Set replacement flange.

This might not work if the pipe bends just below the floor.

This is what DJ1 is referring to. Just be sure you screw it down to the floor.

Thanks for all the replies.
This looks like something I could do myself,I'm fairly handy doing things like this. I just had never run into an issue like this,so I didn't know how to deal with the situation.

If you are using a standard toilet with a 14.5" seat height and are not planning on replacing it, I would build another pedestal out of PT Plywood. The extra seat height is more comfortable. If you are going to a taller toilet (15.5 to 16.5") that is more popular today, then a new pedestal might not be such a good idea.
