Washing dishes, basement sewer smell

We just bought our house in April (yay for our first home!) and it's an older home built in 1927. We're having a problem with our finished basement. Whenever we do dishes upstairs (no dishwasher, so they're done by hand in the sink), a horrible, sewer-y smell wafts up from the basement. It doesn't seem to happen whenever we do laundry (our washer/dryer are downstairs too) or when we shower/flush the toilet. It only happens when we're running the water to do dishes. There are just two of us, so it doesn't take long to wash them (maybe 10 minutes total?) but in that time the basement smells awful. Any ideas on how to fix it, or locate where the smell comes from?
