Wall Tile Question

I am building out a walk-out basement. I have some cinderblock walls with drylock on the bottom 1/3, which is below grade. I want to apply tile (travertine) to this wall. I don't know if thin set can be used directly on the cinderblock and what about the area covered with drylock? Please advise.

Re: Wall Tile Question

Drylock is, by definition a moisture barrier. Nothing is meant to stick to it and it won’t. If you’re going to tile over it you need to apply a substrate such as a concrete backer board. You can screw through a concrete backer board to the masonry with tapcon or similar screws.

You certainly can use thinset directly on ‘unsealed’ cinderblock, that’s a long tradition of masons for finishing it.
