Wall Plates

I am currently in the later stages of a massive remodel of my small house. I wanted to have wall plates that were good looking. Of course to my dismay anything that looks good is fairly pricey. While that may be OK for a room or two when I started figuring for the whole house the price quickly rose into the hundreds of dollars. But I really couldn't stand the thought of looking at the cheap plastic plates. I bought the cheap plates, some plastic primer, and textured spray paint of various colors. I sprayed them first with the plastic primer and then with the paint (the paint I liked didn't come in the variety you could spray right on plastic so I used the primer first). The result is great, they look good, seem to be pretty durable, and for a cost of about $20 and some time I was able to do the whole house.

Re: Wall Plates

Another idea is to rough sand and glue wall paper on the plates.

do it better
