Walkway Paint for Ice

On our new house the concrete walkway leading up to the front door is on a slight incline. The previous owner painted over the concrete making it extremely dangerous during freezes. The concrete below has a extremely light broom finish.

What type of additives or paints could I use to make the surface safer when it ices up? Will it hurt the new surface if I salt it?

Any other opinions of how I might handle the issue?
