Waffle-headed nail question

My husband ran across waffle headed nails in renovating our old garage. Does anyone know when they were in use or any history of them?

Framer's hammers had a waffle head design on the head of there hammers to grip the nails. The design was often imprinted on the nail head after being struck by the hammer.

Cement-coated Sinkers have always had waffle/hashed heads. I think the coating would make them too slick to drive otherwise.
