Ugly, horrible, hideous, condemnable, walkway!!!

Life is strange, it seems I could not get any home projects done because I was working and making money, now that I have been laid off, I have the time, but am unwilling to put out a lot of money. Well this walkway has been an issue since we moved in. Anyone have any ideas about how to make this somewhat presentable? Would prefer a way to either refurbish, or cover the railroad ties, as for the tree that’s growing through the brick... ahh no clue. Thanks for your help!

I'm having a hard time understanding what I'm looking at here. Do the ties run the entire way?

Why are the ties there? Are they needed? Could you get way with removing the ties all together, removing excess dirt, power washing the walkway, and just plant on either side?

Does the walkway have severe cracking or is it in good shape?

I guess I should expand on the problem… and add pictures of it… The main thing is after doing some digging I don’t know if the foundation was repaired or some kind of hack job was hastily done but there needs to be a height variance to cover up the protruding cement seen in the new pictures. I now wish to remove the railroad ties because in doing some research I found that they attract termites, and I really don’t want that, perhaps a rock wall or something easy. I’m not too good at this sort of thing. As for the walkway, it is in good condition, no cracks except for near the stairs… well it’s actually not a crack, but a hole… or as I look at it my frog/newt/snake/scorpion/spider refuge!

So can you take out the wooden beams?

hmmm... it almost looks like a footing. Does this house have a basement?
