Type of fireplace?

Hi. We just purchased an older home in coastal NC. The deed says 1900 but the lawyer told us that’s the date they use when they are not sure of the exact date. In the living room is what appeared to be a fireplace with a mantle and no hearth. It was just covered with a piece of plywood and the grates where shut. After purchasing the home as us we removed the plywood and it is not a fireplace it is only a hole similar to he ones located in the kitchen for the cook stoves. We did notice the chimney is not as high as others we have seen. I am just trying to figure out what kind of fireplace is it. It has no hearth and a mantle and a hole instead of a firebox. It never had a hearth either as the floors are all the original hardwood.
