two clogged toilets

i just read about the woman with an apple in her toilet. we might have the same problem, or similar. both of our toilets are stopped up. we can get them to flush, but only using the plunger. we bought a snake, to no avail. and then today rented a professional 75 foot 1/2 inch sewer snake from home depot. after running all 75 feet of it through the upstairs toilet and then the downstairs one as well, we put the downstairs toilet back on it's base and it still isn't flushing properly. what are we doing wrong? we are "do-it-yourself'ers" and really don't want to have to call a plumber if we can get it done ourself. thank you. any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: two clogged toilets

It is possible that the problem really isn’t your toilets but your vents. Perhaps your vent is plugged. The water can’t get out if air can’t get in. It’s like putting your finger on a drinking straw full of water – the water will not run out the bottom since air cannot get in. The fact that you’ve snaked the toilets and it is two at the same time really leads me to suspect this.

In order to check this someone has to get up on the roof and check your vent. If you do this yourself make sure you know what you are doing and take all safety precautions. Falling off a roof can ruin your day (and some bones and perhaps your life).

we tried that yesterday. he climbed on the roof and made sure and the vent is clear. so it has to be something else....

If the showers, tubs and sinks all drain fine, then the problem would seem to be lurking in the toilets themselves or within a few feet of the toilet. When you had the toilets off, did you turn them upside down and either back snake them or run a hose from the bottom up? Often times children's toys, tooth brushes, etc can lodge in the goose neck of the toilet, the only way to get them out is to flip the toilet and push it out from underneath.

thank you! yes, last night around one in the morning we had the toilet upside down in the backyard with the garden hose and the snake and out popped a pen. now for the upstairs... what are the odds that my three year old would flush something down both toilets on the same day?? not unlikely!!

In addition to what A.Spruce mentions .... here's a tip ......

after determining there is a clog instead of testing by flushing the toilet each time ....
slowly pour water into the toilet bowl from a bucket.
This way will be less messy.

This can also be done if you have removed the toilet .... by pouring water from the bucket down the 3 inch pipe to see if it backs up .... indicating a flow restriction.
Don't forget to replace the wax ring when reinstalling the toilet.

Just 2 cents worth.:)

Oops ... I was slow typing .

Good stuff:)

Yep ... you can't predicate the odds of what children can do.:D

Re: two clogged toilets

Glad to have helped. Oddly enough, when I move into both my last house and this current one, the previous owner had dropped a toothbrush into the toilet. No amount of plunging or augering would get it to release and drop back out, it required flipping the toilets upside-down and blasting a hose from underneath.

In all my years in the trade, as a matter of practice, I'd flip every toilet that I had to pull - whether it was a clog problem or for floor replacement - and back flush them. I can't tell you how many times an army man, toothbrush, or some other small item would come out. It was a quick and easy way to prevent call-backs and it took no more time, really, than to have not back flushed it to begin with.

Glad you got your problem sorted out, and as Canuk said, use a fresh wax ring whenever you reset a toilet. :)

Sprucey, I hope you returned all those toothbrushes to their rightful owners.

They've probably been searching all over trying to find them.
