Tudor - Gable Vent and Knob
Joefromjersey

Hi, I live in an old Tudor style home in NJ. Above my front door is a peak roof with a gable vent and a knob a few feet below the vent. The knob doesn't turn.. Should it.? Should I be able to close the vent in the winter as my foyer becomes ice cold? I tried to upload a picture, but was not successful. Regards, Joe,, and Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.

I don't know if the knob is supposed to close the vent, but generally attics need venting all year round. A better solution would be to check the insulation and add more if needed. I would guess the insulation is inadequate. Does the foyer have any heat vents?

Thanks, The foyer does not have any heat vents. How do I get in the peak to replace the insulation? The gable opening would be quite narrow. What is the knob for? Is it possibly a hook to hang something on?

To confuse everyone.

The folks who respond on the forum don't have any control over the forum.

Wish we did.

Joe, why don't you repost your original question so others can see it. I could copy it and put it with my now 1st post so people aren't too confused.

It looks like a ladder hook.

Or a hook to hang a wreath? It seems to far below the vent to have anything to do with it. I can't see how the house is configured, but can't you get access to that area from the attic?

Hi, I could add more pictures tomorrow. As far as i know, there isn't an entrance to the small roof above my front doorway and foyer. What is a ladder hook? I hook to help secure a ladder when you place it against the home? Maybe there was an opening from the foyer but was closed off over the years? Thanks to anyone who might have any ideas on the knob or on how to enter the attic above my doorway? regards, Joe
