Tom Silvas elastic waistband trick for balusters

In season 10 #1009, Tom Silva had a neat trick for spacing the balusters on a railing without "doing the math" using elastic waistband fabric. I came in late to the show and missed the beginning where he laid out the measurements on the fabric before stretching it out.

I would like to try this but I missed those first few steps. Can anyone help?

Thanks

He marked the unstretched waistband at 2" intervals, then stretched to desired length.

That is so like cheating!:eek::D

I would just use a 2x4 as a spacer.

The problem with that is if that spacing doesn't work with the length of the run. That's the point of the elastic, you make your marks evenly along it, then stretch to the desired length and the markings stay uniformly spaced.

The elastic trick will work as long as the final spacing isn't over 4". That depends on how much you tug at the elastic and that the elastic stretches evenly.

Oh the elastic can stretch pretty darn far --- just ask Sprucey how far his elastic waist band on his underware stretches. :D:p:D

Torque to yield is always a good rule of thumb. ;):D

I wish I knew about that a few years ago. It is a great trick.

As far as I can tell through experimenting with this method, it will give you even spacing only between each balluster. The end spaces between the newel posts and its adjacent balluster will match eachother but the spacing will not be uniform with the balluster layout.

Maybe I missed something that Tom did.
