Toilet wont flush

The toilet won't flush when I push the lever down. The water does drain down, but the cycle doesn't complete. The bowl fills back up without flushing. The flapper takes awhile to reset and the overflow tube fills up with water when flushed. Any ideas?

If you mean the bowl doesn't empty ... I would start by using a plunger or a closet snake to try and free the obstruction that may be present.

Perhaps small childern that have have dropped a toy into the toilet?

Re: Toilet wont flush

A small child did drop some toilet paper into the tank, not the bowl. I emptied it out as best I could but I believe that there is still some in there. It took numerous flushes to get the toilet to flush and it did start working but has stopped now.

Re: Toilet wont flush

Try this simple test ... get a container .... say 1 gallon of water .... pour it rapidly into the bowl.

If the water in the bowl rises and doesn't drain .... then there is a restriction in the siphon trap of the bowl itself.

If canuk's idea checks out, the put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and flush again. Then watch the bowl for the colored water to evenly swirl down the sides. If you had toilet paper in the tank and it went through the system, then the holes under the lip of the bowl could be clogged, the colored water will determine if the holes are plugged.

Re: Toilet wont flush

Thanks. If pouring the water down doesn't work, do I need to use a snake to clear the siphon trap?

Re: Toilet wont flush

If a plunger doesn't work then you could try the snake.
Worst case scenerio is to remove the toilet to see waht's there and try and dislodge it.

Re: Toilet wont flush

Well, pouring water rapidly into the bowl got the toilet to flush. I then cleaned out the holes under the rim and although they seemed to be okay; it still wouldn't complete the flush cycle. When observing the flush cycle with the tank top open, I noticed that the overflow tube filled up right away with water. I don't believe that it's supposed to do that (it didn't happen to the second bathroom's toilet).I don't know how to correct that. Looks like I'll have to call the experts in
