toilet overflowed

help our stool upstairs overflowed and soaked the carpet and pad, it also seeped through to my tile cieling in the living room, eventually i want to drywall the ceiling and don't want this to happen and ruin the new ceiling. Is there something i can do to prevent this? if we pull the carpet, can i put some kind of barrier down and then lay new flooring over it? Please help me don't know what to do?

Re: toilet overflowed

First thing --- address the overflow issue.
If need be clear the obstruction to the drain pipe --- if it is due to a local issue of the toilet itself then shut the water off if the toilet starts to backup.

Second -- carpet in the bathroom ?!?!? That's not a good idea in my opinion.

Third ---- it would be quite the undertaking to completely make the floor 100% water tight ---- it can be done but really isn't necessary .
